A group of Dartmouth graduate women in science who completed fieldwork in Greenland this past summer, as part of the Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program, created a parody of the European Commission’s video, Science: It’s a Girl Thing!, that has attracted some attention. Their video, Science in Greenland: It’s a Girl Thing, highlights the real experiences of women in science, directly contrasting the original, lipstick-laden video which features fashionable women striking poses, and one person in a lab coat: a man. The graduate women’s video, featuring fun scenes, and clips from their research, has encouraged other creative video responses (links can be found in The New York Times article mentioned below), and the discussion continues to evolve.

Prof. Dean Madden, one of the recipients of the 2012 Faculty Mentor Awards, talks about his approach to graduate mentorship and doctoral education at Dartmouth.

Each year, Dartmouth’s Graduate Student Council (GSC) announced the recipients of the 2012 Faculty Mentor Awards at the Graduate Poster Session. Established in 2005, the award recognizes and highlights the outstanding graduate mentoring activities that are undertaken by Dartmouth faculty advisors. In addition to publicly recognizing each recipient’s contributions to the school’s graduate community, the GSC also credits $500 dollars to each faculty member’s Dartmouth account to encourage further mentoring.

Congratulations, Professor Madden!

When Random House published Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax in 1971, Newsweek magazine called it “a hard-sell ecological allegory.” The book received a lukewarm reception from the public initially, as English Professor Donald E. Pease, the Ted and Helen Geisel Third Century Professor in the Humanities, explains in this video and in his Seuss biography, Theodor SEUSS Geisel (Oxford University Press, 2010).

“Some of Dr. Seuss’s most loyal fans expressed their disappointment at the way the tale’s message supplanted Dr. Seuss’s zaniness for its own sake,” Pease wrote. “The book did not get onto the best-seller lists until the environmental movement picked it up.”
