Flooding on the Mississippi River, May 2011

During May 2011, the lower Mississippi River experienced some of the worst flooding it has seen in at least seven decades. On May 10th, the Landsat-5 spacecraft passed over this region, and captured dramatic images of the flooding thanks to mostly-clear skies. Researchers at the GIS/ASA Lab have analyzed that imagery, along with similar images from a year earlier, to determine the spatial extent of floodwaters on this date.

Here are some of the early results from this analysis. Please feel free to use these images for any noncommercial purpose, subject to the following requests:
  • Please include a credit line acknowledging the Laboratory for Geographic Information Science and Applied Spatial Analysis, Dartmouth College. Please also drop us an email to let us know how youíre using them. Thanks!

  • Use of these images is at your own risk; we cannot provide any assurances about the accuracy or usefulness of these data. This study was done rapidly, and is intended to provide a qualitative illustration of the extent of flooding, and to demonstrate the applicability of remote sensing and GIS analytical methods. These data should not be relied on for any activity with economic or environmental consequences. While we believe the study results are appropriate, we donít assume responsibility for any problems that may arise when using them. If you have questions about this, please contact us.
The data used for this analysis were Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper images collected on 10 May 2011 and 7 May 2010. The raw data were provided courtesy of the US Geological Survey, and were obtained via EarthExplorer. Further information about flooding in the US and worldwide can be found at the Dartmouth Flood Observatory.
