In addition to generally available opportunities, Dartmouth maintains a number of
special arrangements for the benefit of its own students. These include a number of
exchanges with various universities, research internships at several Max Planck Institutes, other internships with
the German parliament in Berlin, and off-term work opportunities. There are post-graduate possibilities
as well. For a complete list, together with
information and advice on how to apply, see the
Opportunities for Dartmouth Students (This site is restricted to the College's network).
A partial list of what is to be found there:
- Dartmouth - Max Planck Institute Internships: several
annual one-term internships at the Max Planck Institutes in Martinsried (near Munich) and Jena are available to qualified Dartmouth students who have at
least junior standing, sufficient background in biology or chemistry, and at least some knowledge of German.
- Dartmouth/Thayer School of Engineering Exchange Program
with the University of Aachen; students can transfer credit for one term's study at Aachen toward
Dartmouth's A.B. or B.E. degree. Another arrangement exists with the Universität der Bundeswehr in Hamburg.
- Federation of German-American Clubs Exchange: a junior-year exchange program at a German university
for academic credit in most fields; a German
student comes to Dartmouth in exchange.
- German Parliament Internship: eight weeks' paid work in Berlin (Fall, Winter, Spring quarters only).
- Various Aids for Finding Off-Term Jobs and Internships.
- DAAD/Fulbright Research Fellowships: Dartmouth graduates have traditionally had good success in applying
for grants for a year's post-graduate study in
Germany. In addition to the generally available fellowships, Dartmouth is
entitled to nominate a graduating senior for a special one aimed at those
interested in subjects other than German literature or culture
(e.g. physics, engineering, psychology).
- Fulbright Teaching Fellowships: an opportunity to teach
English at a secondary school in Germany for one academic year.
- Dartmouth Medical School Exchange Program sponsors two or three months of research at the Medizinische
Hochschule Hannover.
