Foreign Studies Program (FSP)

Konzerthaus

Each fall, the Foreign Studies Program offers more advanced students an intense immersion in Berlin life and culture. The prerequisites: two courses (or the equivalent) beyond German 5 (but not including 7). Students who participate on the summer LSA directly before may petition the director to have one of those courses waived. As with the LSA, students live with local families and take three Dartmouth courses taught exclusively in German. The program includes visits to concerts, operas, plays, and museums, as well as a trip to Vienna.

  • German 29 (Advanced Language Training) is taught by Gesine Voeste-Scherer, a long-time instructor at both the Free University and the Goethe Institute in Berlin. She studied at the Free University of Berlin and University of Würzburg, as well as at Princeton and Berkeley. She has also taught at Reed College and the Universities of London and Kent. Note that German 29 does not count toward major credit.

  • German 30 (Studies in German History) is taught by Dr. Siegfried Heimann, a social historian from the Free University. It focuses primarily on Germany's more recent political history and includes visits to a number of historical sites. It carries "Historical Analysis" distributive credit.

  • German 31 (Introduction to German Theater) is taught by the Dartmouth faculty member in residence and treats a selection of plays being performed in Berlin's many theaters.

  • Particularly well-qualified students may arrange with the director to substitute German 85 for German 29. These students will still fully participate in German 29 but will also undertake a significant independent study project. Unlike German 29, German 85 carries major credit.
