Non-Recording Option

For those students in good academic standing, the Non-Recording Option is a process by which you may elect, under certain conditions, to exclude a grade in one (and only one) regularly graded course from your record in a given term. Some students have erroneously referred to the NRO as a 'Pass-Fail' option. It is not. Application of the NRO permits you to indicate either the lowest letter grade you are willing to have recorded on your transcript, or the intention to have a final standing of NR (Non-Recorded). Students will often elect the use of the NRO in courses they are taking as electives. The option is meant to encourage students to experiment with courses that may be new to them, and in which they may not feel entirely confident.

When you elect the NRO, the course grade will not appear on your transcript, nor will it be used in the calculation of your grade point average. Rather, the designation "NR" will appear on the transcript. The exception to this policy is that the failure of the course will invalidate the election of the NRO option. In these situations the "E" is recorded and used in the calculation of the grade point average.

A course in which the final standing is NR cannot be used to satisfy your major or General Education requirements. The NRO can be used a maximum of three times.
