Dartmouth College recognizes the International Baccalaureate Diploma and
grants credit for superior performance on the Higher Level IB examinations,
provided that the exams cover fields of study represented by Dartmouth’s
academic departments in the arts and sciences. Students with comparable scores
on IB exams that fall outside of these parameters should bring them to the
attention of the dean of first-year students, who will make a determination
about credit, based upon the judgment of the Committee on Instruction. Students
who have completed the IB curriculum will ordinarily be granted, on
matriculation at Dartmouth College, one course credit for each score of 6 or 7
on the Higher Level examinations. A second credit may be granted, subject to
departmental determinations. These credits may be used to reduce the number of
courses required for graduation, but may not normally be used to satisfy any
other degree requirement.
Credits awarded for A-Level or IB work will be unspecified, except in those
cases where an academic department grants specified credit in place of, not in
addition to, the general credit (refer to A-Level and IB charts in the
First Year Book on pages 99-100 for department guidelines).
Unspecified credits have value primarily in reducing the number of courses
needed to graduate. Students given course credits under this arrangement must
still complete all College and departmental requirements for graduation.
Credit will be granted by the Office of the Dean of First-Year Students in
accordance with the above policies. Students should make sure that the
First-Year Office has received grade reports, and should bring their
credentials (grade reports, transcripts, syllabi, exam papers) with them in the
fall for evaluation by individual academic departments. All claims for credit
for British A-Level and IB work must be made by the end of the fall term of the
first year.
Questions about International Baccalaureate should be addressed to the First-Year Office.
