During the first five days of the term, you may add, drop, or change courses. During the second five-day period you may only enter a class with the written permission of the instructor of the course you wish to add to your schedule.
After the ten-day deadline, you may replace one course with another only under rare circumstances. To do so, you must obtain the following information in writing: your present instructor's certification that you are not failing the course to be dropped, the proposed instructor's permission to enter the course to be added, and the permission of the Registrar.
Students may withdraw from a class after the ten-day drop deadline (and until the last two weeks of the term), but the course will remain on the transcript with the neutral designation "W" for withdrawn. During the last ten days of class, a student may withdraw from a class only by petitioning a special committee, on the basis of circumstances entirely beyond the student's control. Petitions for late course withdrawals are very rarely granted. You will need a signature form a first-year dean for both requests.
The most important issue is to select your courses carefully and to pay very close attention to published deadlines. These deadlines are noted in the academic calendar published in the ORC. Because of the fast pace of Dartmouth courses, any delay in starting a course will place you at a disadvantage, and deadlines for dropping or withdrawing from courses are very strictly observed.
