The Wisdom of Crowds by James Surowiecki
The First-Year Summer Reading program engages each new class in a shared academic experience. A member of the Dartmouth faculty is selected to deliver the first class lecture during Orientation and the class is asked to read a text in preparation for that lecture. Additional programs, faculty dinners, and performances are scheduled throughout the year to explore the themes of the lecture further.
First-Year Summer Reading Book Prize
A first prize of $300 and two honorable mentions of $100 towards the purchase of books will be awarded to the winning essays. Entrants are asked to submit a 1,000 to 1,500 word essay in response to the summer reading The Wisdom of Crowds, by James Surowiecki. Essays should address the application of Surowiecki's idea to one of the following themes: the cross-cultural interpretation of Surowiecki's framework, notions of power and leadership, or the use of Surowiecki's framework to effect change.Essays may be written in the formal or informal voice; most importantly, your individual voice should be represented. A clear understanding of the text must be demonstrated. Essays must be typed and double-spaced. Entries must be submitted by October 1, 2008 to the First-Year Office. No name or identifying information should be included in the body of the essay. Please attach a cover page containing your name and Dartmouth ID#. Submissions will be judged anonymously and the winning entrant will be notified in early November. Eligibility is limited to the Class of 2012.
