Our goals for Orientation are to:
Arrival and Check-In
Check-in for both Orientation and your residence hall will take place on Tuesday, September 15, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and ending at 12:00 p.m.
Please make every effort to arrive between 8:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. Professional and student workers will be available to distribute keys, direct traffic, and move belongings to your room. If you arrive on campus between 12:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., please go to the Undergraduate Housing Office, located in the basement of North Massachusetts Hall, to pick up your key. Students arriving after 4:30 p.m. should contact the Department of Safety & Security at 5 Rope Ferry Road to gain access to your room (their office is open 24 hours per day, 7 days a week). The Undergraduate Housing Office is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Please refer to the information you recently received via email from The Office of Residential Life for more information. And don't forget to visit their web site: www.dartmouth.edu/~orl/shortcuts/incoming.html.
Pre-Orientation ("Pre-O")
Students arriving for Dartmouth Outing Club (DOC) trip sections E - J will be able to move into their residence halls prior to September 15. The Dartmouth Outing Club has complete details on their web site (www.dartmouth.edu/~doc/firstyeartrips/) or you can contact them via email. If you are on campus following your DOC trip, for a fall sport, or are an international student who has arrived early, head to the Collis Center to get all of your "Pre-O" information. The Pre-O Interns and Pre-O Advisors will keep you busy getting to know the campus and one another before the entire class arrives.
Class of 2013 Summer Reading Book
The First-Year Summer Reading Program engages each new class in a shared academic experience. In preparation for President Jim Yong Kim's "Lecture for New Students" during Orientation, the Class of 2013 has been asked to read Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder. In this book, the author recounts the work of Dr. Paul Farmer, Dr. Kim, and Partners in Health.
You should have received Mountains Beyond Mountains in the mail as a gift, thanks to the generosity of The Sphinx Foundation.
Tuesday, September 15, 2009
Whether you are accompanying a new student from Vermont or Thailand, we recognize that bringing a child to Dartmouth is a major transition for any family. For that reason, we have planned a schedule of activities for Tuesday, September 15th that should give you a chance to get your son or daughter settled into their residence hall room, grab a bite to eat as a family in the dining hall, and learn more about how you can support your student's success at Dartmouth.
PARENT AND FAMILY ORIENTATION SCHEDULE
8:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. Move-In to Residence Halls
Drive directly to your student's residence hall where they pick up their room key while our friendly staff assists you unloading your vehicle and move belongings to your student's room. Then we will direct you to park your vehicle in one of two perimeter parking lots for the rest of the day. Campus shuttle buses are available to and from the parking lots, or you can walk the short distance (5-10 minutes).
10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Sustainable Move-In Sale - Common Ground in the Collis Center
Student leaders of "Sustainable Dartmouth" work together to reduce the environmental footprint on campus by organizing a 1-day sale of dorm essentials. They collect used furnishings from outgoing students, clean and sort them, and offer them for sale to incoming students in the infamous one-day Sustainable Move-In Sale. The merchandise includes lamps, dorm refrigerators, TVs, appliances, wastebaskets, file boxes and other typical student gear. It does not include linens, pillows or clothing. Proceeds support local non-profit organizations and student sustainability projects. Shop at the Sustainable Move-In Sale and go green! For more information, visit: www.dartmouth.edu/~moveout.
11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Family Lunch - Thayer Dining Hall
Moving day ... enough is going on without deciding what to do for lunch. Dining Services will feed the family - Mom, Dad, Sister, Brother come on in. No tickets required; today, lunch is on us!
11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Indispensable (!) Information and Resource Fair - Tindle Lounge in Thayer Dining Hall
Plan to spend at least 10 minutes at this event so that you can file your phone numbers and email addresses with the College for emergency contacts, learn about laundry service, talk with the department of Safety & Security about bike registration and campus safety, and pick up a copy of the essential Organizations, Regulations, and Courses. Other programs and services will also be represented.
2:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Parent and Family Orientation - Spaulding Auditorium in the Hopkins Center
Dartmouth President Jim Yong Kim will welcome parents and families. Following there will be a series of informational programs specifically for the parents and families of Dartmouth first year students. Staff will cover topics including the changes to expect in your student over the coming year, the role of the faculty advisor and your student's dean, the academic structure at Dartmouth, and federal regulations regarding the confidentiality of students' records. In addition to formal presentations, Parent & Family Orientation will have plenty of opportunities for you to connect with our staff about specific issues and learn more about what Dartmouth expects of your son or daughter and what you and they can expect of Dartmouth.
5:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Time to Say Good Bye
Parents and families, it is now time to hit the road. It will have been a busy and exciting day, but it is time for the new students to move into the next phase of their Orientation and begin meeting the other members of the outstanding Dartmouth Class of 2013.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO WELCOMING YOU TO DARTMOUTH!
