Orientation Goals

At Dartmouth we care for one another, expect much of ourselves, and embrace learning. Orientation is about new beginnings - we're working to plan an Orientation program that gives you the tools to make a strong start. You will receive the complete schedule when you arrive in September, but in the meantime, here is a sampling of what you might expect:

Orientation introduces the First-Year Class to the academic programs, opportunities and expectations of the College.

  • Working with faculty advisors and deans to explore our curriculum and select courses for the first term;
  • Taking an exam to determine your correct placement or earn credit for learning you've already done;
  • Reflecting on the first-year reading in the Class Lecture and follow-up programs;
  • Exploring how you learn and developing skills and strategies that support your success.

Orientation facilitates interaction among the campus community and a sense of class identity.

  • Running or walking in the Tucker Foundation's Run and Rally to support a service project such as Habitat for Humanity ;
  • Cheering on Dartmouth teams;
  • Joining your new floormates at a community dinner;
  • Listening to upper-class students share their stories at Experiences.

Orientation provides the time and information necessary to make a personal transition to Dartmouth.

  • Learning about on-campus employment and finding a job;
  • Visiting Main Street and opening a bank account;
  • Taking the bus to West Leb to purchase something you forgot to pack (if you're from warmer climates that may be a "real" winter coat!);
  • Setting up your computer and learning all about the e-mail system we call "blitz".

Orientation acquaints students to the residential, social, cultural and recreational opportunities at Dartmouth.

  • Discovering the latest exhibit at the Hood Museum of Art;
  • Signing up to play ultimate frisbee or another sport with an intramural team;
  • Visiting various cultural and academic affinity houses;
  • Taking a trip out to the Ski-Way or Morton Farm, our horseback riding center.
