You can meet professors in less structured ways. Some professors train with an athletic team, sing or play an instrument with a performance group, or hire students as baby-sitters or pet-sitters. You can also meet members of the faculty on a casual basis through a variety of activities outside the classroom, lab or office. Many of the activities listed below post their scheduled events on the College events calendar.
- The Dean of the College sponsors a variety of activities to provide students with the opportunity to get to know professors in the residence halls.
- The most extensive program occurs in the East Wheelock Cluster with its resident faculty advisors and weekly events that often involve professors. Most activities at the cluster are open to students, even if they do not live in East Wheelock. Consult the cluster calendar.
- Many UGAs organize events that invite faculty members to participate in discussions with first-year students about academic issues.
- Other important opportunities arise through Athletic Team Faculty Advisors, Advisors to Affinity Houses and Cultural Organizations, the Organic Farm, and events coordinated by the Center for Women and Gender or the staff in the Office of Pluralism and Leadership.
Some of the most popular ways to get to know a professor occur over lunch. For example:
- Take a Professor to Lunch, for which students obtain a voucher for the Hanover Inn. Contact the Student Activities Office for more information.
- FAST Talk Buffets, also at the Hanover Inn, where professors reserve space in the Drake Room for group discussions.
- Book and Author Luncheons occur monthly at the Hayward Lounge in the Inn where a faculty member leads a discussion about his or her recently published work.
- Collis Center is a good place to start a casual conversation with faculty members who eat there at lunchtime.
