The First-Year Office is responsible for the orientation and adjustment of
first-year students to the Dartmouth College environment. Critical to the
adjustment of first-year students is support and encouragement for their
intellectual engagement, creativity, and preparation for responsible
citizenship. Orientation is intended to begin the process by which students
effect a transition from the environments of the home and secondary school to
the academic, social, and residential life of the College. In addition, the
First-Year Office familiarizes students with our community's principles,
standards, and expectations. The office organizes and administers First-Year
Orientation, the East Wheelock Living-Learning Program, the Integrated Academic
Support Program, the First-Year Summer Research Project, summer mailings, and
works extensively with pre-major advising and the writing program.
In the First-Year Office, we all enjoy getting to know as many students as
possible in the incoming class, and we try to be accessible and responsive. We
readily answer phone calls and Blitz Mail queries, and it is usually possible
to see a dean within a day or two of requesting an appointment. Students who
are experiencing academic difficulty are invited to meet with a dean to discuss
how to improve their performance. The deans also provide information about
important College resources and make referrals, as needed.
