Borrow Direct
Borrow Direct provides access
to books not in the Dartmouth College collection Ð as well as to books that
are currently unavailable from
the Dartmouth collection (checked out, on reserve, in process, missing, on order,
or non-circulating).
Borrow Direct provides direct
access to the combined Library catalogs of: Brown University Columbia
University Cornell University
Princeton University University of Pennsylvania Yale University
Search the Dartmouth Library
Catalog for a book. If it isn't in the collection or is checked-out you click
on the link for Borrow Direct
(from within the Library Catalog) and see if any of the other BD libraries own
the item . If they do, and it's available, you click the "Request" button and
your request is sent. The lending location is chosen automatically based on
availability. When the book arrives you're
notified by e-mail.
Borrow Direct delivers most book requests to Dartmouth within 4 business days.
For Books NOT available through Borrow Direct make requests through "Interlibrary Loan."
Interlibrary Loan
You can request material NOT OWNED by the Dartmouth College Library through the interlibrary loan service. The Library will try and obtain material of any type or format the lending library chooses to honor our request, or not.
Submit requests: use the ILL Web Page ("Dartmouth Library Interlibrary Loan"), or submit a handwritten form at the ILL office (Berry Library, behind the Reference desk) or at the Reference Desk (Berry Library).
ILL takes a certain amount of time, approximately 7-10 days for microforms, books, or other volumes. Less time for journal articles.
Include a complete citation for the material:
Books: author, title, publisher, date of publication.
Articles: author, article title, journal title, volume no., pages, date of publication.
it speeds the process at our end and insures the lending library will supply the correct item(s).
Circulation Services
You can verify the "circulation
status" of books in the Online Catalog. "AVAILABLE" tells you
the book is not checked out.
"DUE 3/29/03" tells you the book is checked out and is due back by
this date.
If material is checked out you may recall an item by filling out a request at Circulation.
NOTE: borrowers get to keep material for a minimum of 2 weeks.
If you cannot find a book
or journal volume that should be in the library but isnt on the shelf
Circulation can "trace" the material and
attempt
to locate it for you.
Storage Library
Older or less frequently used library material may be kept at the Storage Library.
Items at Storage may be recalled for use on campus by simply submitting a "Storage Request" to Circulation OR by submitting an electronic request through the Library Catalog - "Request Selected Item."
The material will usually be delivered by the next day.
