TRMM TMI Quick Look Images, subsetted at Dartmouth from global mosaics prepared by Chris Kidd, NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center
Comments:
Flooding was partially the result of dam releases after hydroelectric dams along the Niger River filled. "Unusually heavy rains" in late September were reported as the cause (this is part of the rainy season). The relative roles of "unusual" precipitation and dam operation are not certain; proximal cause for the floodplain innundation was opening of floodgates. However, TRMM TMI shows a major rainfall event 9/20-9/23, 1999.
In these images:
Rainfall and snowfall: yellow and white areas (yellowish white is highest intensity precipitation)
Oceans: light blue (low water vapour) to dark blue (high water vapour)
