Flooding: 09/24/99-09/29/99

West Bengal India and NW Bangladesh

(1) 14 Day Precipitation History

TRMM TMI Quick Look Images, subsetted at Dartmouth from global mosaics prepared by Chris Kidd, NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center

Comments:

Flooding was due to intense monsoon rains that persisted an unusually long time: into September. A rainfall on September 24 of greater than the (1978) record of 15 inches was noted in news reports for Calcutta. TRMM TMI show intermittent heavy rains for the two week period preceding flooding, and in particular on September 12-14 and September 21-24. The storm on the 24-25th is visible in two images shown below: this was an extreme rainfall event captured by TRMM.

In these images:

Rainfall and snowfall: yellow and white areas (yellowish white is highest intensity precipitation)

Oceans: light blue (low water vapour) to dark blue (high water vapour)
