EXPLANATION

Flood location data are compiled from a variety of news wire services and governmental sources; the "type of flood" and "flood region classification" entries are our own estimates. This information is presented in order to facilitate research into the occurrence and causes of extreme flood events and to provide early international notice of such events. Catalog numbers are intended to represent discrete occurrences. However, repeat flooding in some regions (e.g. monsoonal India) is a complex phenomenon and we strive for a compromise between aggregating and dividing such event. The listing is comprehensive and global in scope. Deaths and damage estimates for tropical storms are totals from all causes, but tropical storms without significant river flooding are not included in the catalog.

The following tabular data file is updated daily. The global flood map is updated weekly. Dartmouth catalog numbers correspond to approximate chronological sequence but are never changed. Data are presented as comma-delimited text in the following fields: 1) Catalog number,2) main location, including tropical storm name,3) detailed locations,4) onset date,5) termination date,6) confirmed deaths,7) estimated displaced,8) dollar damage estimate,9) type of flood,10) anecodotal recurrence interval in years,11) minimum hectares or acres under water,12) Hayden flood region classification (key follows data as separate lines). You can import these data as comma-delimited text into most spreadsheets directly from this html document saved as text; "nd" used as "no data" place holder.

In progress: you will be able to click on "DFO" to obtain climatic and geomorphic measurements pertaining to each flood, as well as satellite remote sensing products and analyses.
