Project Management Office

Dartmouth's Project Management Office is a college-wide resource with responsibility to:

  • Support execution of key, cross-institutional initiatives
  • Enhance the capacity and effectiveness of the organization for change
  • Serve as a Center of Excellence for tools and methods of project execution, portfolio management, and process improvement

Through our work we support Dartmouth in maximizing its return on mission from resources invested in key initiatives.

Dartmouth Project Portfolio Approach

The goal of the Dartmouth Project Portfolio Management approach is to enable effective execution of critical initiatives through:

  • Connecting the project portfolio to strategic objectives
  • Facilitating cross-divisional engagement
  • Aligning critical resources
  • Rapidly resolving issues and risks

The Projects

Our cross-institutional portfolio consists of projects that fall into four main focus areas:

  • Academics and Research
  • Student Life
  • Finance and Operations
  • External Relations

Since early 2010, nearly three dozen projects have been completed.  The current completion rate is seven to eight major projects each quarter.  Active and recently completed projects include:

  • Strategic sourcing
  • Print-to-digital strategy
  • Finance Center design and implementation
  • Sustainability planning
  • Redesign of student academic support
  • Critical IT infrastructure initiatives

Leadership Engagement

A number of leadership groups participate actively in the project management process to provide guidance, oversight, and project support.  These include a cross-section of administrative staff at multiple levels in all divisions.

  • The One Dartmouth senior institutional leadership group reviews key initiatives on a regular basis, providing strategic direction and sponsorship
  • The Thursday Operations Group provides active project oversight, evaluation of resource needs, and resolution of critical project issues as required
  • The Program Management Team provides consulting advice and hands-on support to project leaders and others engaged in project and portfolio management

Future Evolution

We continually seek to improve the speed and effectiveness of our execution.  Ongoing enhancements include the extension of project and portfolio management to the divisions and professional schools, and the creation of a Dartmouth-wide forum to share tools, techniques, and expertise in all aspects of execution excellence.
