Diversity Initiatives

The following are a sampling of diversity-related initiatives throughout the Finance and Administration Division.  Additional efforts are planned or underway, and most departments have revised their mission statements to reflect the College's commitment to diversity.

Facilities, Operations, and Management (FO&M)

  • A commitment to diversity is included in FO&M's mission statement, which was revised in 2000.
  • FOM, in agreement with SEIU, has created an apprenticeship program that specifically encourages women and minorities to apply.  The apprentices receive training in a three to four year cycle (depending on experience when entering the program).
  • FO&M has been working with ID&E to develop a training program that focuses on making respect a workplace norm. The program balances efficiency with effectiveness, and builds upon lessons learned from past programs focused on similar outcomes.   FO&M hopes that this program can become a model that other departments can utilize.

Real Estate Office

  • The Real Estate Office has extensive interaction with the local community, and balances a variety of interests. Real Estate focuses on creating healthy, appealing, mixed use community developments.
  • As the newer housing inventory increases, there is a focus on providing sufficient barrier free housing, and every project includes some accessible units.
  • The Real Estate Office also accommodates economic diversity in new projects, building multiple types of units available at a range of prices within developments.

Human Resources

  • HR has been engaged in the development and deployment of an image campaign. The campaign is intended to increase awareness of Dartmouth as a desirable employer to all categories of potential employees, and minority candidates are a key target audience.
  • HR hopes to develop guidelines for departments to hire interns, creating a mutually beneficial experience that can tap into the diversity of the student body, and further the educational mission of the College.
  • HR has helped to develop and implement the After Hours program, which provides employees with social opportunities in the evening and on weekends.  This is a way for staff to meet others and to create a more welcoming environment at the College for all employees.

Environmental Health and Safety

  • EHS provides training to a large and diverse array of individuals across campus, and consistently strives to provide equal access.  Staff that provide training seek feedback from trainees to improve programs, access, and communication.

Procurement & Auxiliary Services

  • Procurement has a Supplier Diversity Program, to link purchases to a diverse group of potential suppliers.  More information about the program can be found at the Supplier Diversity Program site.
