Waste Reduction

  • Stop/reduce volume of printed material. Send digitally or publish on the web and announce via D2U.
  • Reduce duplicate mailings to staff both at work and at home, and send mailings one to a department instead of one to each individual.
  • Allow employees to opt out of printed College communications.
  • Evaluate the frequency of printed communications- can they go out less often?
  • Communicate the cost of published material to demonstrate possible cost savings.
  • Add reminder to e-mail messages to think twice before printing message or enclosure. Encourage e-filing of messages, rather than printing hard-copies.
  • Go paperless- make reimbursement forms, time sheets, purchasing processing, newsletters, etc all digital. Put everything on the web or on community servers.
  • Make double sided copying the default for all operations.
  • Stop buying bottled water. Tap into Hanover Water Works.
  • Recycle "used" equipment via the web and make these items more visible.
  • Order less food for events, and consider whether food needs to even be served at all (and whether the event needs to be held). End deliberate over-ordering so that staff get the leftovers.
  • In food service areas, make napkins, cutlery, condiments, etc. available on request rather than openly available to non-paying customers.
  • Have departments send e-cards instead of paper holiday or event cards.
  • Encourage everyone to take personal measures to reduce the use of disposable materials such as paper towels, utensils, and plates.
  • Stop supplying paper cups- provide mugs or have people bring in their own reusable items.
  • Have a centralized space where unneeded items and supplies can be left for other departments to use.
