o, yeah, we are a bunch of guys who get together and sing music without rocking drums and wailing guitar solos. We are all the first to admit this. But, hey, as far as a cappella music goes, we're not too shabby. Get a whiff of the kind of Cavern Club, CBGB-type hit factory the Brovertones are: prominent alumni include Elvis, John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Roger Daultry, Robert Plant, Sid Vicious, Axl Rose, and Ben Steele. (Neither Scott Stapp nor any other prominent members of Creed have ever been in the Brovertones. We think about this and smile.)
The phoenix known as the Brovertones rose out of the ashes of another Dartmouth a cappella group, Spontaneous Combustion. A group of eight members from the same class, Combustion was much like all those baseball players in Field of Dreams: they appeared one day in 1992, wowing crowds with their harmony and hilarity, and then in 1996 just mysteriously disappeared BACK into the cornfields. However, before disappearing into that anonymity called graduation, Combustion passed on some musical arrangements and an attitude to a bunch of guys who awkwardly called themselves "Final Cut." A cult was born.
The group performed admirably for over a decade, touring across the country (and more frequently around the campus), but the members grew restless. They knew it was not consistent with the storied SC tradition to retain the same name for such a long period of time. In the spirit of this tradition, the group renamed again in 2008 to their current iteration - the Brovertones.
The Bros have maintained the small size inherited from Combustion. Instead of a larger chorus, the group keeps itself a small ensemble of talented members. We've all been told it's not the size that counts. We sing smooth ballads (e.g. Truly Madly Deeply) and contemporary pop (e.g. Kids), and still manage to rock out (e.g. songs by Aerosmith and the Rolling Stones) with more cajones than any group around. As one student remarked, "You guys are my favorites. It's not the size that counts!" The fans, or "band-aids" as we like to call them, are also a big part of why we like to stay small. It's simple math. Rare is a concert without some shouts of encouragement and yearning, e.g. "Engelbro is so hot!" "We love Frank!" "Get outta the way! You're blocking Engelbro and Frank!", etc.
We sing shows around the Dartmouth campus, but also love to travel. Our recent trips include a winter tour in Boston and NYC - singing at Quincy Market, Weston High, and Dobens' mom's house. However, we also host shows for other groups, illustrated by our packed house concert with the Middlebury Paradiddles in 2009. Of course, we are more than just another run-of-the-mill, all-star, supergroup that sings beautiful harmonies and makes both men and women swoon. Courtesy of our great repertoire and original skits, the Brovertones are readily identified as the most high-energy and laugh-inducing group on campus.
So, yes: I lied. None of those guys up at the top of the page has been in Final Cut except Ben Steele. However, the rest is true. We are a great-sounding group of guys who rock out at concerts and love to have fun. Check out the rest of the website and give us a listen!
