While on a residential fellowship at the Camargo Foundation in Cassis, France in the winter and spring of 2009, Jeffrey Ruoff visited nearby La Ciotat, one of the birthplaces of motion pictures. Here in 1985, the Lumière brothers shot The Arrival of a Train in the Station at La Ciotat, which they later projected at the Eden Theatre, one of the first motion picture theaters in the world.

In May 2009, Ruoff attended the Cannes film festival, as part of his ongoing research on the role of festivals in film culture.
