Ronald M. GreenA member of Dartmouth's Religion Department since 1969, Professor Green also directs Dartmouth's Ethics Institute, a consortium of faculty concerned with teaching and research in applied and professional ethics. He is a summa cum laude graduate of Brown University and received his Ph.D. in religious ethics from Harvard University in 1973. In 1996 and 1997, Prof. Green served as Director of the Office of Genome Ethics at the National Human Genome Research Institute of the National Institutes of Health. Prof. Green's research interests are in genetic ethics, biomedical ethics, and issues of justice in health care allocation. He is the author of six books and over one hundred thirty articles in theoretical and applied ethics. His most recent book, The Human Embryo Research Debates: Bioethics in the Vortex of Controversy, was published in 2001 by Oxford University Press. In 2005, Prof. Green was named a Guggenheim Fellow.

Prof. Green serves on the bioethics committee of the March of Dimes. In 1994 he was a member of the Human Embryo Research Panel of the NIH, a blue ribbon commission appointed to recommend policy for federal funding of research on the preimplantation human embryo. In 1998-99 Prof. Green was president of the Society of Christian Ethics. He served two elected terms as Secretary of the American Academy of Religion, the largest professional association of religious studies educators in the United States. He currently heads the Ethics Advisory Board of Advanced Cell Technology, a company involved in therapeutic cloning research. He recently completed his second three-year term as Chair of the Religion Department. In 1980 he received the Dartmouth Distinguished Teaching Award. This award, given to a single member of the faculty annually, is voted upon by the entire graduating class.
