Ethics Institute Welcomes First Dorsett Fellow

October 7, 2003. This fall the Ethics Institute is proud to welcome its first Dorsett-Cottrell Fellow in Applied and Professional Ethics. Tom Chappell, Co-Founder and President of Tom's of Maine, will be the recipient of a new ethics fellowship named in honor of Dartmouth alumnus Burt Dorsett '53.

Chappell will be in residence at Dartmouth College from Tuesday, Oct. 14, through Friday, Oct. 17, and from Monday, Nov. 10, through Thursday, Nov. 13. During his residency, he will meet with groups of students and faculty to offer an abbreviated version of the ethical leadership program he teaches at the Saltwater Institute in Maine. On Tuesday, November 11 Chappell will speak at a free public lecture in 105 Dartmouth.

Chappell was selected by the Ethics Institute Faculty Advisory Board in part for his commitment to set "an example of ethical business standards for others." He has received numerous awards for his work and written two books, The Soul of a Business: Managing for Profit and the Common Good and Managing Upside Down: Seven Intentions for Values-Centered Leadership. His books address operating profitable businesses in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. Chappell is also founder of the not-for-profit Saltwater Institute, which offers innovative value-centered leadership development programs.

The Dorsett-Cottrell Fellowship was established in 2001 by Research Technologies Corp. (RTC) and the Frederick Gardner Cottrell Foundation. The award is named, in part, for Burt Dorsett, who was a founding board member at RTC. Upon his retirement from RTC, the company chose to honor him with creation of the fellowship.
