Biomedical lab Physiologic monitoring equipment includes: BIOPAC Monitoring Station, MP100 WSW: The variables we monitor include blood pressure, heart rate, respiration rate, temperature, ECG, and blood flow. Blood Gas Analyzer: A Rapidlab 845 (Bayer Corporation Diagnostics Division, Norwood, MA) includes the base model and the CO-ox module. This fully automated system is used for the determination of pO2, pCO2, pH, tHb, FO2Hb, FHHb, FMetHb, and FCOHb in blood of animals. It allows keeping physiological conditions within normal ranges during in vivo experiments. I-STAT Portable Clinical Blood Gas Analyzer: (i-STAT Corporation, East Windsor, NJ). This fully automated system is used for the determination of pO2, pCO2, and pH in any place for collaborative studies.
Oxygen measuring equipment includes: A Platinum Series Process Oxygen Analyzer (Delta F. Corp., Woburn, MA) is used for calibration of solutions and gases for in vitro and in vivo experiments. This instrument is designed to measure precisely oxygen content in a flowing gas mixture in the range from 0.00 to 25.0%. It is used with a standard gas mixer (Merriam-Graves Gases, White River Junction, VT). A conventional Clarke electrode (Microelectrodes, Londonderry, NH) with a custom-made converter and digital pO2 display is used routinely as the standard to calibrate solutions and gases. The system is equipped with a custom-made temperature controller capable of regulating temperature within 0.50 C. Eppendorf Histograph oximeter/KINOC-6650: This is a polarographic device specifically developed for measuring oxygen in tissues, using a fine needle probe. OxyLite oximeter: This multi-channel fiber-optic pO2 monitoring system uses oxygen dependent quenching of fluorescence of ruthenium compounds at the end of a fiberoptic probe and thermocouple. Airway Gas Monitor, CAPNOMAC ULTIMA: This monitor allows us easily and reliably measure the essential airway gas parameters including end-tidal CO2, concentration of inhalation anesthetic agents, inspiratory, and expiratory O2 concentration. Pulse Oximetry, NONIN 8600v: This machine displays SpO2 and pulse rates up to 500bpm, and blood oxygen levels can be continuously monitored for long time. Other biomedical experimental equipment includes: Warm Water Circulator, TP210: This circulator uses a warm water blanket and circulator to maintain body temperature during anesthesia, surgery and EPR measurement. Anesthesia Vaporizer, Tech 3 Isoflurane Vaporizer: This is a commonly used anesthesia machine, designed to be unaffected by pressure, temperature and flow rate to give an accurate level of anesthetic concentration. Anesthesia Vaporizer, Ohio Halothane Funnel-Fill Vaporizer: This machine (Harvard Bioscience, Inc., Holliston, MA) is designed to be unaffected by pressure, temperature and flow rate to give an accurate level of anesthetic concentration. It a commonly used anesthesia machine. Small Animal Ventilator, Model 683: We have two of these machines (Harvard Apparatus, Inc., Holliston, MA). Each is designed to be used for small animals from 250g to 10kg, e.g. rats, rabbits, cats, and small dogs. This machine displays the respiratory rate which can be set from 18 to 150 strokes/minutes. Volume and rate setting can be adjusted while the ventilator is running. It is a commonly used respiratory machine. Lab Standard Stereotaxic Frame, Model 51600: We have two of these machines (Harvard Apparatus, Inc., Holliston, MA). Each is available for mice and rats. The triple-start lead screws allow for fast positioning possible consistent with lining up the scales easily for a given position. Surgical Stereo Zoom Microscope, ZoomMaster 65 and Leica S6: We have two of these machines (Braintree Scientific Inc. Braintree, MA) and Leica Microsystems Inc. (Bannockburn, IL).These machines provide an erect, unreversed stereoscopic image with bright, crisp, par focal imaging throughout the zoom range, and also provide a 10× to 40× magnification and a long working distance. These machines are very useful for fine microsurgery. Equipment for Production of Paramagnetic Material LiPc: A Voltammetric Analyzer CV-50W (Bioanalytical Systems, Inc., West Lafayette, IN) is used for the electrochemical study and synthesis of lithium phthalocyanine radical (LiPc). The system is run by a computer and features all basic analytical techniques along with the option of bulk electrolysis at a constant potential. Two custom built devices to carry out potentiostatic electrolyses for production of LiPc have been constructed EPR Center for the Study of Viable Systems
