Bio: “Aloe” Yu Luo Rioux * received her Ph. D. from the University of Colorado at Boulder in the Spring of 2008. She worked at Primary Source (www.primarysource.org) as Program Director for the China/Asia Programs and is currently Adjunct Professor for Sothern New Hampshire University (www.snhu.edu) and UMass Lowell (www.uml.edu). She is also Adjunct Professor for the School of Foreign Languages of Economics and Trade at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (http://www.swufe.edu.cn/) in Chengdu, Sichuan, China and Principal of Derry Chinese School (www.derrychineseschool.org).
Drawing from a broad academic background, Rioux’s research interests extend from language acquisition and cultural studies to human/cultural geography, modern Chinese history, tourism, development, and landscape. Her most recent publications include an article “Green with Red: Environment and Jiangxi’s Tourism Development” in Asian Geographer (2006, published in 2009, 25(1-2): 125-144). The paper entitled: “Pilgrim or Tourist? Transformation of China’s Revolutionary Holy Land” by Rioux is a chapter in /Faiths on Display: Religion and Tourism in China/ (2010, Tim Oakes and Donald S. Sutton, eds. Rowman & Littlefield). Rioux is also a contributing writer for /Berkshire Encyclopedia of China/ (2009. Linsun Cheng et al., eds. MA: Berkshire Publishing Group LLC) and /Encyclopedia of Modern China/ (2009. David Pong, ed. MI: Charles Scribner’s Sons/Gale/Cengage Learning). Her guest lecture “SARS and Crisis Management with Chinese Characteristics” is based on a paper presented at the 2007 New England Conference of the Association for Asian Studies.
