Abstract: Presentation will address Physician Profiling: Transparency in the high stakes game of cardiac surgery, based on Dr. Nugent's involvement in the Northern New England Cardiovascular Study Group. This consortium of cardiac centers in ME, NH, and VT has been an international leader in using outcomes (population based) data to reduce variation, and improve outcome in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

The Northern New England Cardiovascular Disease Study Group (NNECDSG), is a regional voluntary consortium founded in 1987 to provide information about the management of cardiovascular disease in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. The group adopted the following mission statement:

The Northern New England Cardiovascular Disease Study Group exists to develop and exchange information concerning the treatment of cardiovascular disease. It is a regional, voluntary, multi-disciplinary group of clinicians, hospital administrators, and health care research personnel who seek to improve continuously the quality, safety, effectiveness, and cost of medical interventions in cardiovascular disease.

The NNECDSG maintains registries for all patients receiving coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), and heart valve replacement surgery. During the last seventeen years, data on approximately 150,000 procedures were collected and analyzed. The group meets three times per year to review data reports and to plan studies.

Members include cardiothoracic surgeons, interventional cardiologists, operating room and cardiac ICU nurses, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, administrators, and scientists associated with eight institutions in nothern New England. The sites are: Catholic Medical Center, Manchester, NH; Central Maine Medical Center, Lewiston, ME; Concord Hospital, Concord, NH; Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, NH; Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor, ME; Fletcher Allen Health Care, Burlington, VT; Maine Medical Center, Portland, ME and Portsmouth Regional Hospital, Portsmouth, NH.
