Abstract: A Review of the Cancer Center, with discussion of innovative techniques currently being applied to solve the inefficiencies within the system that render the US unable to meet the demands placed on the Healthcare system by our patient population.

The work described focuses on the application of LEAN/Six Sigma to hospital operations in order to increase efficiencies, expand capacity, improve quality and directly impact the bottom line.

Acord Bio: Elizabeth Acord joined Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Western Regional Medical Center as Director of LEAN/Six Sigma Operations in 2007. Prior to this position she was a participant in Cancer Treatment Center of America’s Management Fellowship Program. During her fellowship, she spent two years working in various capacities within the corporation at both the hospital-level and corporate-level before she decided to focus on LEAN/Six Sigma and was offered the opportunity to move to Arizona and help design and build the LEAN program at the Phoenix hospital.

Elizabeth has her Black Belt in Six Sigma from the University of Michigan, a master’s certificate in Project Management from the University of Wisconsin and her B.A. from Dartmouth College. At Dartmouth, she had the opportunity to take Dr. Rosen’s ENGS classes and she is honored to return as a guest lecturer.

DeBarba Bio: Herb DeBarba joined International Capital and Management Company as Executive Director of Lean Operations in 2006. He has earned his Black Belt Certification from the University of Michigan and has established an impressive track record of successes in both the manufacturing arena as well as in the service industries. His work on behalf of International Capital Management for Cancer Treatment Centers of America has garnered much attention and has been touted in publications by both Joint Commission and Center for Health Transformation.

Prior to joining IC&MC, Mr. DeBarba provided consulting services for ten years directly to financially troubled companies; primarily in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries; often leading them out of Chapter 11 or preventing them from filing for bankruptcy. The utilization of lean/six sigma strategies was instrumental in each of these success stories.

Mr. DeBarba also enjoyed a successful 18 year career with Johnson & Johnson, holding such positions as Director of Quality Assurance and Technical Services, Chief Engineer, Plant Manager and Business Unit Manager. During his tenure with J&J he opened new manufacturing plants and helped to author the J&J Continuous Quality Improvement Process.

Mr. DeBarba graduated from Saint Anselm College in Manchester New Hampshire with a degree in Chemistry.
