Getting Started

Most English courses are open to all students on a space available basis. Consult Course Descriptions for a listing of courses or the online ORC for full descriptions.

The English major requires students to satisfy major distribution requirements and choose a concentration area. For further information on the major, or a modified major, or a minor, see The English Major.

If you are planning to major in English, you need to become more familiar with this Website.

You may want to consider applying for one of our three Foreign Studies Programs (warning: they are quite competitive). Creative Writing is a concentration area within the English major. See Programs in Creative Writing for the admission procedures for Creative Writing courses. If you have a high enough grade point average, you may, as a senior, be among those who choose to write Honors Theses.

Considering how many undergraduate English majors there are, you should consider participating in programs and discussions initiated by the English Department's Student Liaisons. Many events hosted by the English Department, such as readings by nationally known poets, novelists, and critics, are scheduled at Sanborn House throughout the academic year.

In order to stay apprised of these and other newsworthy events in the Department, you should monitor the Department's Blitz Bulletin.
