The ebsp.m Matlab application

Before using this application, be sure that you have calibrated the pattern center and entered its coordinates in the patcenter.m file (see Calibration). Also, ebsp.m can only index poles that are in the pre-defined pole type list (see Pole definition).

You must first copy all the pattern image files (in binary format) in the same folder/directory as the EBSP package files. The name of the image files must end by .RAW.

From this directory, run Matlab. On the SGI type at the prompt "matlab"
At the matlab prompt (>>) type ebsp

You will be asked if you want to save the results in a file. If you just want to index a pattern, you might not need to save the results. If you want to index several patterns and use the results in the eulernorm.m and eulsig.m applications, you should say yes.
If you choose to keep your results in files, you will be asked for a name. ebsp.m will then create three text files,

  • filename.res which will contain the grain number, the euler angles, and the grain normals
  • filename.eul which will contain only the grain number and the euler angles in the format expected by the eulsig.m application
  • filename.nrm which will contain only the grain number and their normals in the format expected by the eulnorm.m application

You have then to choose an image file in the pop-up menu. Click first on the file name and then on the done or OK button. On the SGI, having the file name highlighted is not enough , you have to click on the file name, or the application will crash. You can also cancel.

The pattern image will appear in a separate window, and you will be asked to click on four poles in the pattern. Note that you must not choose the three first poles on the same Kikuchi band . Also, the application will pause until you click four times in the pattern.

After having chosen the four poles, you will be asked if you want to continue and index the pattern. If you are not satisfied with the way you have chosen the four poles, say no and you will be asked for a new pattern file, and you can start again. Note that you will not loose any results already saved in the result text files.

After having indexed the pattern, the pole indexes will be shown in the pattern image and you will be asked if you want the euler angles of the grain. If you answer yes, the grain euler angles and normal will appear and the program will pause. To continue type return.
You will then be asked for the grain number. This number does not need to be sequential, as you can index patterns in any order. The results are then saved in the result files

The pattern indexation is now complete and you will be asked if you wish to index another one.

If the application crashes all the results saved until the crash will be in the result files and will not be lost. You can then start again ebsp.m and continue from the crash on, saving the results in new result files. Since all the result files are text files, you can always copy and past them into one file wich can then be used by eulnorm.m and eulsig.m.
