Laboratory Training Descriptions
Formalized training specific to Dartmouth College is mandatory for all lab personnel including:
This guide describes the different training programs offered by EHS that can help you work safely in Dartmouth College laboratories. Depending on your research, you may need to attend or take a number of these training modules. Training is required under various Federal and State Rules and Regulations. Please contact EHS if you have specific questions, 646-1762 or e-mail email@example.com.
Computer based training modules are all available through the EHS website and BIORAFT. Classroom sessions and registration instructions are posted on the EHS home page and registration is through BIORAFT.
Introduction to Laboratory Safety
This training is mandatory for all personnel working in a teaching or research laboratory. It is an introductory program on laboratory safety in a biomedical, engineering, chemistry, earth science or physics lab at Dartmouth College. Training lasts approximately 2 hours. Completion is only required once. Note: This program is now a prerequisite for the Biological Safety Level 2 course.
Hazardous Waste Management
This training is mandatory for all laboratory personnel who work in hazardous chemical labs. This training must be current within three years for all individuals who work in laboratories where hazardous chemicals are used.
Introduction to Biological Safety Level 2 (BSL2) Training
This training is for all individuals who will be working with human blood or other potentially infectious materials at Biological Level 2 (BSL2)
This also includes recombinant DNA (rDNA) experiments that require registration with the College's Institutional Biosafety Committee. Training lasts approximately 30 minutes. Completion is only required once. Note: you must complete the Introduction to Lab Safety training prior to completing this course.
Biological Safety Level 2 (BSL2) Retraining
This is an annual training requirement for all personnel working at Biological Safety Level 2. This training is not a substitute for the basic training that is required of all new personnel to Dartmouth BSL2 laboratories.
Introduction to Radiation Safety
This training is for all individuals who will be working with radioactive materials, other sources of ionizing radiation or applying for a radiation badge. Attendance is only required once.
Radiation Safety Retraining
This is an annual training requirement for all personnel working with radioactivity. This training is not a substitute for the basic training that is required of all new personnel to Dartmouth laboratories.
X-Ray Equipment Safety Training
This is an annual training requirement for all individuals working with equipment that generates ionizing radiation. You will receive equipment specific training from the equipment owner.
