EHS Training

EHS has completed the new on line Introduction to Laboratory Safety Course, this course replaces the monthly classroom offerings and removes any remaining barriers to full compliance by anyone working in a DC laboratory specifically undergraduates with class conflicts.

Laboratory Safety and Compliance Training

Laboratory Training Descriptions

Formalized training specific to Dartmouth College is mandatory for all lab personnel including:

  • PI’s
  • Technicians
  • Post-docs
  • Graduate Students
  • Undergraduates Working in Research Laboratories
  • Visiting Scientists
  • Volunteers

This guide describes the different training programs offered by EHS that can help you work safely in Dartmouth College laboratories. Depending on your research, you may need to attend or take a number of these training modules. Training is required under various Federal and State Rules and Regulations. Computer based training modules are all available through the EHS website and BIORAFT. Classroom sessions and registration instructions are posted on the EHS home page and registration is through BIORAFT.

 

Introduction to Laboratory Safety

This training is mandatory for all personnel working in a teaching or research laboratory. It is an introductory program on laboratory safety in a biomedical, engineering, chemistry, earth science or physics lab at Dartmouth College. Training lasts approximately 2 hours. Completion is only required once. Note: This program is now a prerequisite for the Biological Safety Level 2 course.

 

Hazardous Waste Management

This training is mandatory for all laboratory personnel who work in hazardous chemical labs.  This training must be current within three years for all individuals who work in laboratories where hazardous chemicals are used.

 

Introduction to Biological Safety Level 2 (BSL2) Training

This training is for all individuals who will be working with human blood or other potentially infectious materials at Biological Level 2 (BSL2)

This also includes recombinant DNA (rDNA) experiments that require registration with the College's Institutional Biosafety Committee. Training lasts approximately 30 minutes. Completion is only required once. Note: you must complete the Introduction to Lab Safety training prior to completing this course.

 

Biological Safety Level 2 (BSL2) Retraining

This is an annual training requirement for all personnel working at Biological Safety Level 2. This training is not a substitute for the basic training that is required of all new personnel to Dartmouth BSL2 laboratories.

 

Introduction to Radiation Safety

This training is for all individuals who will be working with radioactive materials, other sources of ionizing radiation or applying for a radiation badge. Attendance is only required once.

 

Radiation Safety Retraining

This is an annual training requirement for all personnel working with radioactivity. This training is not a substitute for the basic training that is required of all new personnel to Dartmouth laboratories.

 

X-Ray Equipment Safety Training

This is an annual training requirement for all individuals working with equipment that generates ionizing radiation. You will receive equipment specific training from the equipment owner.

 

Laser Safety Training

This training is for all individuals working with Class II and above lasers.
