Curriculum Vitae

Visiting Assistant Professor James Nelson is interested in conceptual change in science education (in particular) and why people believe what they do (in general). His primary research interests concern building on the findings from basic research in cognitive science and neuroscience to better understand why certain types of conceptual knowledge are particularly and persistently difficult for students to acquire, and how to more effectively teach these concepts. He has previously conducted basic research on visual perception, strategies in working memory, and the mapping of cognitive control mechanisms in the brain using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Professor Nelson teaches Education 16: Educational Psychology and Education 58: Language Acquisition in Winter term and Education 56: Science, Education, and the Scientific Mind and Education 60: Learning and Education Across Cultures in the Spring term of academic year 2008-2009.
