My first career was as a middle school teacher, and for a decade I loved teaching young adolescents. Then after years of idly wondering "What is going ON in these kids’ minds!?" I decided to turn that into a question of scientific interest. I remain fascinated about children and their brains. I seek to impart that sense of wonder to my current students, and to help them see themselves not only as learners, but as scientists.

Research and Teaching Interests

As a social cognitive neuroscientist, my interests are in explaining the cognitive and neural mechanisms behind social interactions. I am particularly interested in how very basic mechanisms of executive function can help facilitate plasticity in the mind and brain. For example, I have used training of cognitive inhibition to reduce implicit racial bias. In addition to a project examining whether girls' schools affect girls’ unconscious attitudes towards and performance in math, I have ongoing research projects in creative cognition and the role of error feedback in promoting efficient learning. I conduct research using numerous methods: behavioral assessment, EEG/event-related potentials, and electrical stimulation of the brain.
