Materials Characterization is central to many studies in the Earth Sciences. At Dartmouth, we have a number of facilities devoted to chemical and physical characterization of materials. Please contact Josh Landis or Ed Meyer for information about these labs.

EARTH SCIENCE CHARACTERIZATION EQUIPMENT
Freeze Dryer
A device to remove water from a sample. Please contact Josh Landis for information. 219 Fairchild.
Surface Area Analyzer (BET)
Measures the surface area of sediment or mineral grains. Please contact Josh Landis for information. 217 Fairhcild
Colter Counter
A particle size analyzer. Please contact Anthony Faiia or Josh Landis for information.  
ICP-OES
A inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer to quantify elemental abundance. Please contact Josh Landis for information. 217 Steele
Raman Microprobe
A 543nm Raman Microprobe with confocal microscope. Useful for materials identification. 217 Steele
X-Ray Diffractometer
A device to identify minerals and mineral structure. Please contact Ed Meyer for information. 219B Fairchild
Sample Digestion Apparatus
A Pico Trace high P/T apparatus, Anton Parr high pressure asher, microwave digester and aluminum block used to digest rock and soil samples. Please contact Josh Landis or Ed Meyer for information.  
Ge Detectors
Devices used to measure short lived radio nuclides. Please contact Josh Landis for information.
