Thomas Merrill
Letter from Webster
Letter to Thomas Merrill (1801)
This letter fragment relates a humorous anecdote in which Webster encountered
a rather fetching young woman with an enrapturing scent. He later detected that
same scent coming from a cake, and jokingly suspected the partakers of that cake
of being "Anthropophages!" This is the only existing correspondence between
Webster and the Valedictorian of his class from Webster's time at the College.
