Our broad goal is to understand forest dynamics in terms of the tree populations that make up the canopy, and to apply this understanding to questions in basic research, forest management and conservation. Integrating Population and Community Dynamics Using our long term data on trees and shorter term demographic studies of juvenile stages, we are developing matrix-based demographic models, in which populations are linked via their effects on patch dynamics. We are extending this work to examine how the life histories and demographic responses of trees, together with disturbances regimes, determine tree species composition and relative abundance.
