LEBANON, NH – David Hall Allen, 69, of Lebanon, NH and Seabrook Island, SC died August 3, 2006 of pulmonary failure following unrelated surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
He was born in Philadelphia, PA on June 22, 1937, a son of Milton Irving Allen and Willis (Hall) Allen. After graduating from Nether Providence High School in 1955, he was awarded a Naval scholarship to Dartmouth College , Class of 1959, and the Amos Tuck School of Business, Class of 1960. While at Dartmouth, he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and the Dragon Senior Society. Following his graduation from business school, he served as a Lieutenant Junior Grade in the US Navy until 1963.
Dave began his business career in field sales at the Scott Paper Company, Philadelphia, PA, in 1963 and subsequently worked at their headquarters in brand management and new business development from 1968 to 1974. In 1975 he joined the Marketing Corporation of America, Westport, CT, as a consultant and ultimately became the President of the Consulting Division and a Member of the Board of Directors before leaving to begin his own consulting firm in 1992. Allen and Associates, Inc.’s consulting specialties were Strategic Development, Customer Management, and New Business Development. Some of his clients included Quaker Oats, H.J. Heinz Company, Sara Lee Corporation, Kraft Foods, and Ross Laboratories.
Dave had two children with his first wife, Frances Hardie, whom he married in 1962. In 1979 he married Mary “Polly†(Atchley) Allen and together, with their children from prior marriages, they became a wonderfully blended family living in Weston, CT.
In 1992, Polly’s career took them to North Carolina for six years, during which time she decided to leave her corporate position and join her husband in Allen & Associates. Working together in business gave them the opportunity to set time aside to pursue their personal interests in collecting fine craft and traveling. Their adventures included trips to the Far East, Europe, and Southern Africa and cruises to Alaska, through the Panama Canal, and to the Baltic countries.
In 1998, Dave and Polly moved to the Upper Valley where he continued to be very involved in the leadership of the Dartmouth Class of 1959. His particular focus was on the Dartmouth Partners in Community Service (DPCS) program, which is an initiative started by his class and subsequently joined by several others, that provides funding and alumni mentors for Dartmouth students who spend their “leave term” working for community service organizations throughout the United States. He was Chair of the DPCS Alumni Board for the last two years. The family has established a DPCS Memorial Fund in his honor. Contributions should be sent to:
