Students, young alums win fellowships

Nine Dartmouth students and young alumni have been awarded Fulbright and German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) fellowships that will support their postgraduate studies.

The Fulbright Program, sponsored by the U.S. State Department, is a flagship international exchange scholarship program between the United States and 155 countries. It offers competitive, merit-based grants for students, scholars, teachers, and professionals.DAAD is a German program that offers programs and funding for qualified graduate students to study in Germany.

This year's winners:

Fulbright Scholarship

  • Jacob Batchelor '12 (Fairview, PA): English teaching assistantship in Malaysia
  • Kelsey Carter '12 (Moraga, CA): English teaching assistantship in South Korea
  • Roger D. Dulceany, graduate student (Lawrenceville, GA): Literary studies in Romania
  • Muhammad Elatab '09 (Chapel Hill, NC): Economic development in Kazakhstan
  • Michael Gillis '12 (Cape Elizabeth, ME): English teaching assistantship in South Korea
  • Nicole Yunger Halpern (Tampa, FL): Study of physics in the United Kingdom
  • Amanada Lee (Great Neck, NY): English teaching assistantship in Thailand
  • Derek Lee, graduate student (Lodi, CA): Study of biology in Tanzania

German Academic Exchange Scholarship (DAAD)

  • Christopher Zarbock '12 (Menomonie, WI): Will decline DAAD to accept a Fulbright Scholarship instead: Study of biology in Germany
