MODERATE 20 mile ride (1 to 1.5 hours)
Like the bagel you eat each morning for breakfast, this ride is the staple of the Dartmouth rider’s diet. Simple, round, and tasty, and hits the spot every time. Follow West Wheelock out of town, cross the Ledyard Bridge and hang a right onto River Road/Route 5. Follow Route 5 up to East Thetford and take a right onto Lyme Road, and cross the bridge. Now you’ve got a choice. Either take the immediate right onto River Road, or stay on Lyme road until you reach Lyme itself, and then head right on Route 10. River road is a little flatter and a lot prettier, but be careful, because it is windy, narrow, and there are plenty of lurking to pop the unsuspecting rider’s tires. Head right when the road eventually merges with Route 10 at the top of a short climb. Route 10 out of Lyme has a nice wide bike shoulder that you should take advantage of, and a decent little 7.5% descent coming down to the organic farm. Whichever path you choose, you’ll hit the Chieftan with about three miles to go — go after it!
