The Dartmouth Jewish Sound Archive was established in 2002 to provide students and scholars with:
- Web-based access to Jewish recordings that are not commercially available.
- Related, searchable information that can aid in the study of Jewish music and culture, Jewish society, and the history of
Jewish recordings.
You will find here a rich array of recordings, some of them rare, dating back as far as 1904. Our database includes sound files, graphics of record covers and labels, and details of the recordings and their contents.
Among the materials that you can browse and search are:
- Jewish humor in many languages
- Yiddish folk songs
- Yiddish theater
- Ladino songs
- Israeli folk songs
- Chasidic niggunim
- Cantorial performances
- Religious services
- Children's holiday stories
- Classical music by Jewis composers or performers
- Historical Recordings
- Radio shows and documentaries
... and other material that defies classification.
Finding Material: We recommend you try using the Quick Search field on the right panel of any window in this site, it's the easiest way to find tracks. More advanced searching and browsing features are also available in the Search link on the left panel of any window in the DJSA. Additional tips on how to search our archive can be found in the "Search Tips" link on the left panel. Please let us know if you have suggestions on how to improve this site.
Want to help? The archive will continue to be expanded as new material is available; this is an ongoing project. If you are in the Hanover NH area, and if you want to help, contact us. If you have any suggestions or would like to contribute some material, please contact us using the link on the left panel.
Please Note: Material available through the database may be copyrighted and should not be downloaded or reproduced. Please read the copyright page.
