Julie was the last hurrah for the DFR era of E85-ethanol internal combustion racecars. The team raced Julie at the California FSAE event, and achieved a Top 10 finish in the Marketing Presentation. Julie’s most prominent features were her monoshock suspension setup, custom in-house drivetrain, and ethanol-powered, turbocharged sportbike engine. An aerodynamic package was also designed for the car, though unfortunately never implemented.

 

Julie’s monoshock setup was an iteration of a suspension design first implemented one year prior with Sandi. The monoshock system, with one shock absorber mounted vertically to handle bump – synchronous vertical movement of the wheels – and several “Belleville Washer” springs horizontally to handle roll – one wheel traveling individually. This suspension design has the advantage of separating tuning for bump and roll, making the system much more intuitive for first-time mechanics to adjust.

The engine that powered Julie was, simply-put, a powerhouse. A Yamaha R6 600cc motorcycle engine was modified from its original carbureted state to accept fuel injection, E85-ethanol fuel, and a Garrett GT12 turbocharger. Estimated to put out approximately 80 horsepower, despite the mandatory air intake restriction, Julie was one of the most exciting cars DFR has built.
