Installing Microsoft IIS Version 5.1 on Windows XP Professional

Microsoft Windows XP Professional is shipped with Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) Version 5.1 on its installation CD-ROM. The following step-by-step directions may be used to install and verify IIS.

1.      Insert the Microsoft Windows XP Profession installation CD-ROM .  The following screen will appear.

2.      Select ‘Install optional Windows components’.  The ‘Windows Components Wizard’ will appear.

3.      Select ‘Internet Information Services (IIS)’.  The default options are appropriate for initial installation.  They may be changed later if desired by following steps 1-2 and selecting the ‘Details’ push button above.  Select ‘Next >’ above.  The following progress dialog will appear.

4.      Wait until the installation is complete.  Once all components have been installed and configured the following summary dialog will appear.

5.      Select ‘Finish’ to close the wizard.

Now that IIS has been installed it should be verified.

6.      Open a Web browser on the system where IIS was installed and type ‘http://localhost (the name of your server can be substituted for localhost if desired).  The following two Web pages will be displayed.

If you get to this point IIS has been installed correctly and is now running with the default content.  You should ensure the latest patches are installed (see Internet Information Services (IIS) Security) before adding your content.
