FROM: James A. Larimore

I am writing to thank you, individually and as a group, for your exemplary work on behalf of the College over the last six months. I am pleased to accept your report and all of the Committee's recommendations.

From start to finish, the Committee's work has been characterized by an extraordinary level of collaboration and trust. Each of you spoke your mind about important issues and it is clear that each of you also listened carefully to others to understand their concerns. It is obvious that the transparency and openness of your work together helped inform your decisions and also generated considerable support and credibility for your work. Endorsement of your recommendations by both the Daily Dartmouth and the Student Assembly provided evidence of the good work you did together as students and administrators who were joined in common purpose.

The April 8, 2005 Daily Dartmouth editorial expressed a hope that my decision to form the committee signaled "… a new direction for the College regarding alcohol policy."  I hope that this work signals something much broader. I believe that the work your Committee has done bodes well for future work, on more matters than just the alcohol policy, that require open, honest, collaborative work between students and administrators. I am optimistic that the collaborative relationship and open process that defined your work can serve as a model for future efforts.

I am pleased to accept your Committee’s recommendations in their entirety and I have directed the appropriate departments to begin work immediately to implement the recommendations for the start of the fall 2005 term.

Finally, I want the seniors who served on the Committee to know how much I appreciate their efforts, and how well you have served the student body and the College. I am grateful that you will oversee both the implementation of the recommendations and the training and transition of the new student Committee members.
