Jamal Brown ’08
Of all his accomplishments, Jamal’s work in the LGBT community
stands out as deserving special recognition. During the 2007 spring term Jamal
spearheaded the first ever Dartmouth PRIDE, a week dedicated to raising
awareness of the rich Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender history at
Dartmouth and celebrating LGBT pride. The week’s events included discussions
with distinguished alumni Keith Boykin ’87 and Joanne Herman ’75, free HIV
testing and a benefit concert to raise money for the Lwala Project, which
involved numerous student performance groups. Many openly gay alums returned to
campus for the event, and the Dartmouth Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender
Alumni Association president, Susi Kandel ’00, wrote an op-ed expressing the
particular significance of this event to GLBT alumni, praising Jamal’s efforts
in particular. Jamal’s efforts have helped make the Dartmouth community more
open, aware and considerate; always uniting and strengthening us.
Whitney MacFadyen ’07
Whitney was honored specifically for her work on three
Dartmouth projects, the Big Green Bus, Winter Carnival Council, and the
Dartmouth Outing Club. Whitney’s enthusiasm and determination as the Big Green
Bus’s Dartmouth liaison has helped her expand the image and role of the Bus to
all parts of Dartmouth’s campus and the Upper Valley as a whole. Her leadership
on the Winter Carnival Council ensured that the annual event has run flawlessly
year after year. Whitney’s involvement in many clubs of the Dartmouth Outing
Club eventually led to her role as its President. In this position, she took
many steps to make the club more open to the general campus while still
organizing events for its die-hard members, including the 50-mile hike from
Hanover to Moosilauke. She managed all of these commitments while being a four
year varsity athlete on the Women’s Cross-Country Ski team. Whitney will
continue to dedicate her time and energy to Dartmouth during the 2007 summer
and fall by welcoming the Class of 2011 during DOC Trips as Hanover Croo
chief.
Jacob M. Goldberg ’07
As a distinguished double major in Chemistry and History, Jacob has
contributed to the Dartmouth community by working to make the sciences more
accessible to his peers. Jacob has served as a Teaching Assistant multiple
times for introductory chemistry courses and became renowned by students and
faculty alike; he put in countless hours in the laboratory, on weekends, and
even with students in his residence hall to provide support and encouragement
through these stressful courses. Jacob was also involved as a writer and
President of the Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Science, helping earn the
publication national recognition and additional College funding. Outside of
science, Jacob has also served as Manager for the Varsity Football team since
the fall term of his first year, a position that has earned him national
recognition by the Athletic Equipment Managers Association. Jacob’s nominator,
Professor Robert Ditchfield, wrote, “In my experience, everything Jacob
undertakes he does with inspirational passion and unswerving commitment. The
extraordinary quality and professionalism that characterize all his
accomplishments far exceed what one might expect of even the most unusual
undergraduate student.”
