Dean's Central Office

Tom Crady, the 11th Dean of the College, brings more than 24 years of experience to Dartmouth. At Grinnell, he was responsible for large construction programs; a variety of student services, groups, and centers; academic advising initiatives; and student social programs and cultural activities. During his tenure at Grinnell, which began in 1982, his experience and responsibilities in student life and student affairs steadily increased. He served as associate dean of student affairs, dean of student affairs, vice president and dean for student affairs. In 1998 he was named vice president for student services. Also in his time at Grinnell he served as acting dean of admission and financial aid and supervised the area for seven years in addition to student affairs.

Tom earned his bachelor's degree at Northern Michigan University, majoring in speech communication with a minor in geography and Earth science. His master's degree, also from Northern Michigan, focused on guidance and counseling, and his Ph.D. from Iowa State University is in education.

Julie Bell joined the Dean of the College team as the Administrative Assistant to the Senior Associate Dean of the College in August of 1999 after 14 years with the Dartmouth Medical School Admissions Office.

Laura Broughton is the Assistant to the Associate Dean of the College, Mary Liscinsky, and the webmaster for the Dean of the College website.

Kate Burke is the Special Assistant to the Dean of the College. Among other responsibilities this year, Kate focuses on implementing the Dean's intiatives and special projects, chairs Committee on Standards hearings, serves as Chair of the Dean of the College strategic planning committee, works closely with Dean of the College student interns and oversees the College's ROTC program. Kate is an attorney by training and has worked in a variety of capacities in the Dean of the College area, the Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity, the Provost's Office and the Hopkins Center.

Tessa Hill joined the Dean of the College Office in October of 2007, as the Administrative Assistant to the Assistant Dean for Development and Administration.  After graduating from the University of New Hampshire in 2004 with a BA in Communications, she took her first job working at DHMC as a clinical receptionist where she worked for 2.5 years. After employment at DHMC she took positions working in the Dartmouth College Office of Donor Engagement and Stewardship followed by work in the Development Office for DHMC and Dartmouth Medical School.

Marcia Kelly serves as the Associate Dean of the College and is the primary contact for the division with staff in Development, Alumni Relations and Public Affairs. She also works closely with the directors of Student Affairs Planning, Evaluation and Research (SAPER,) Career Services, the Assistant Dean for Development and oversees the day-to-day operation of the Dean of the College office.

Diana Kiefer is the Administrative Assistant to the Associate Dean & Executive Officer and the Associate Executive Officer.

Dave Leenders is Associate Executive Officer.

Sylvia Spears is currently serving as Acting Senior Associate Dean of the College. In this capacity, she is responsible for coordinating the division's academic support services and outreach to faculty. The First Year Office, the Upper Class Dean's Office, the Office of Pluralism and Leadership and the Academic Skills Center are under her supervision. Sylvia came to Dartmouth after serving as a member of the faculty in the Department of Human Development and Familty Studies at the University of Rhode Island for the past 10 years. She holds a Ph.D. in Education and a M.S. in Human Development with a specialty in College Student Personnel. Her research interests include examination of the academic expereince of historically under-represented students and the relationship between education environments and educational outcomes.

Terri Sykes is an Administrative Assistant in the Dean of the College Office.

Gordon Taylor is the Associate Dean and Executive Officer.

Gail Wallin is the Director of Information Systems. Gail coordinates and oversees the fulfillment of the Dean of the College division's information system needs and responsibilities, acts as a consultant to individual departments, coordinates the fulfillment of divisional information technology training needs, and is the division's primary liaison to Administrative Computing and other information systems services at the College. She also provides analysis and advice on divisional departments' information systems and processes and consults about future needs, especially in regard to adopting work processes to web-based technology.

Tracy Walsh is the Assistant Dean for Development and Administration.  She joined the Dean's area in December 2004.  In this role, she works closely with Marcia Kelly as a general liaison to the Development office staff.
