Eighth Annual MLK Social Justice Awards and Panel Discussion
Friday, January 30
5 pm, Collis Common Ground

Join us in honoring and hearing about the lives and careers of Dartmouth community members who have enriched our world through their contributions to issues of social justice. The ceremony will include a panel discussion with the honorees and will be followed by a reception.

Co-sponsored by the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, Office of Institutional Diversity & Equity, Tucker Foundation, Dartmouth Medical School, and Dickey Center.

Lester B. Granger ‘18 Award for Lifetime Achievement
Kul Chandra Gautam ‘72 is the former assistant secretary-general of the United Nations and deputy executive director of UNICEF. The highest-ranking Nepali in the U.N. system, he worked hard informally to promote peace and reconciliation in Nepal during the decade-long civil war.

Ongoing Commitment
Ricki Stern ‘87 is the co-director and producer of The End of America, which makes a chilling case that American democracy is under grave threat; The Devil Came on Horseback, a documentary on Darfur; and The Trials of Darryl Hunt, about a man who spent 20 years in prison for a crime of which he was innocent.

Emerging Leadership
Dr. Milton Ochieng’ ‘04 and Frederick Ochieng’ ‘05 are the founders of the Lwala Health Clinic in Kenya and of the Lwala Community Alliance, which works to support an empowered and equipped community movement to advance health, educational opportunities, and economic freedom in Lwala and beyond.

Student Group
The Dartmouth chapter of DREAM is a student-led mentoring organization that matches Dartmouth College students with youth from disadvantaged neighborhoods, with the aim of empowering children to recognize their options, make informed decisions, and achieve their dreams.

KUL GAUTAM ‘72 is a former Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF. He has extensive experience in socio-economic development, humanitarian assistance, human rights, and international diplomacy. In his long and distinguished career with the U.N., spanning over three decades, Gautam dealt with the highest levels of policy making, including the General Assembly, Security Council, ECOSOC, and UNICEF Executive Board. He oversaw UNICEF cooperation in more than 150 developing countries.

As a graduate of Harvard Medical School , a Clinical Instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard for 35 years, and a strong believer in upholding the healing art of medicine, Samuel Shem (Dr. Bergman) will provide excellent advice to any students interested in medicine or health. Samuel Shem (aka Stephen Bergman) is the best-selling author of THE HOUSE OF GOD, a highly-acclaimed, bitingly funny book about medical internships that was recently named one of the most influential books about medicine in the past century. His newest novel, the 2008 National Best Book Award-winning THE SPIRIT OF THE PLACE,  is about a doctor coming home and being healed by the town he was so eager to leave.  Through his novels, essays and plays, Samuel Shem continues to be an important activist for staying human in medicine. A book signing will follow the lecture. Free admission.

Dr. Bergman and his wife, Janet Surrey, will show and discuss a DVD of their award winning play “Bill W. and Dr.Bob” about the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous by Dr Bob Smith (DC class of ‘02), Bill Wilson and their wives. The play ran Off-Broadway for 148 shows in 2007. Free admission.
