How to Help
DCARE is supported by two years of seed funding, which ends December 2003. The success of DCARE, its programs, and its individuals is based upon the initial commitment from the Office of the Provost, the dedication and service of volunteers. We are immeasurably grateful for both. Beyond this initial period, we will need additional support to enable the Center to continue its important work.
Experts agree that the development of model alcohol, tobacco and other drug programs requires a long-term investment, implementation of evidence-based and scientifically evaluated programs, and support from key leadership. These ingredients are especially needed in programs in college and medical school settings. Otherwise, knee-jerk and politically expedient programs are deployed, without any evidence for efficacy, and the desired outcomes remain elusive. Lives are not changed in healthy trajectories.
DCARE is in pursuit of federal and private foundation funding to support its service and research programs in alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. While these grants will support specific projects, they will not support the infrastructure of the Center itself. Most funding agencies are attracted by research investigations. DCARE, distinct from other academic substance-related centers, is instead primarily focused on services and programs--offering direct and immediate help to those who need it.
