Warmest greetings from the Alumni Committee of the Dartmouth Center
on Addiction, Recovery and Education (DCARE). If national statistics
apply, about 1 in 10 Dartmouth graduates has struggled personally with
alcoholism or another form of addiction, and many more of us have experienced
the anguish of this disease through the challenges of someone we love. We know
from experience how devastating the disease can be and many of us have
encountered ignorance, stigma and isolation as we have tried to address it.
Some of us still struggle, others of us have made our peace. Every year,
however, we know that new individuals, including many at Dartmouth, find
themselves struggling with substance problems.
DCARE exists to cultivate and integrate activities within the greater
Dartmouth community that help:
- Assure that the needs of students, faculty, staff and others in the
Dartmouth community, who are challenged by addiction, are effectively
addressed.
- Reduce harmful drinking and drug use on campus.
- Improve understanding of addiction and related problems in order to reduce
the stigma and misunderstanding associated with the disease and to encourage a
culture that recognizes and addresses these problems appropriately.
- Improve the education of health care providers, in addiction medicine in
order that these problems be detected early and addressed appropriately as
medical issues.
At this time the Alumni Committee of DCARE seeks to develop a forum
of alumni in recovery and others whose lives have been affected by the
addiction of family or friends in order to support the mission of
DCARE. We envision the forum lending support to the mission in a variety of
different ways according to our individual interests and strengths, -among the
possibilities:
- Advocating for Dartmouth to effectively address these issues
- Generating ideas and programs to fulfill the mission of DCARE
- Developing supportive relationships among ourselves in addressing
addiction
- Mentoring students, faculty and staff with substance use problems
- Sharing substantive support to assure that substance use issues at
Dartmouth are addressed in perpetuity.
Imagine the powerful force we can create if all recovering, and otherwise
addiction- interested alumni, work together towards solutions. Many initiatives
are currently evolving at Dartmouth that promise to make Dartmouth a leader in
the field.
As a member of the forum you will:
- Receive regular communication from DCARE regarding alcohol and other
drug-related issues and initiatives related to the Dartmouth community.
- Have access to Web-based discussion among Forum members
- Be welcome at quarterly Alumni Task Force meetings held in Hanover
- Be invited to DCARE’s panel discussion on alcohol and other drug issues
held during reunion week each June.

We encourage you to join the Alumni Forum on Recovery at Dartmouth (Alumni
