Dartmouth Grad Designs Memorial

Michael Arad '91 designed the memorial that will commemorate victims of terrorist attacks on the former site of the World Trade Towers. The Dartmouth grad's design of two reflecting pools where the Twin Towers stood and a paved stone field topped a competitive list of more than 5,200 entries evaluated by a jury of professionals and civic leaders. The group praised Arad's work for "its powerful, yet simple articulation of the footprints of the Twin Towers." The memorial honors victims of both attacks on the World Trade Towers, in 1993 and 2001, as well as those who died at the hands of terrorists in Pennsylvania, at the Pentagon, and on the hijacked airplanes.

Arad, a designer for the New York City Housing Authority, said, "I hope that I will be able to honor the memory of all those who perished, and create a place where we may all grieve and find meaning."

High Praise for Ed. Dept.

U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige urged Dartmouth to "lead the way into the future, demonstrating that research can ... improve both educational achievement and the bottom-line for [school] districts."

Paige's remarks were delivered in a visit to campus last month to recognize the College's new vision for its Department of Education, which involves a commitment to basic research in child development and its principled application to both education and teacher training. The secretary also inaugurated the department's newly renovated space in Raven House.

Paige applauded Dartmouth's board of trustees for "their understanding that education programs must be an inherent part of Dartmouth's many contributions to our nation."

Laura Ann Petitto, chair of the education department and a professor of education and of psychological and brain sciences, noted, "Secretary Paige's visit honors our efforts to develop a new kind of education department that promotes a seamless union between basic research and its application to prevailing problems in contemporary education, as well as to the training of young new teachers in our Teacher Education Program."
