This year's incoming class, which will graduate in 2007, was drawn from the largest applicant pool in Dartmouth's history. Of the 11,855 men and women who applied, 2,155 (18 percent) were admitted, about half of whom began classes this fall.
The students' high school class rankings and SAT scores make this group one of the strongest first-year classes ever to enter Dartmouth College.
More than one-third of the matriculants were high school valedictorians or salutatorians. Nearly 84 percent ranked in the top 10 percentile of their class. Median SAT scores were 710 on the verbal test and 720 on the math; mean scores were 706 and 711 respectively.
This year's class, as last year's, represents a diverse population. One-third are students of color; another 6 percent are international students.
The mid-Atlantic states send one-third of the class-the largest single group-followed by the West, New England, the Midwest, and the South.
Forty-six percent of the class of 2007 will receive scholarship assistance. All admissions decisions at Dartmouth are made on a need-blind basis.
