LATINO INTERSECTIONS
Census data show that Latinos are the fastest growing minority in the United States. However, grouping an entire population under a single ethnic classification tends to cloak the diversity of different Latino/a communities.

Latino Intersections, a new web site created by Dartmouth's faculty and staff, in conjunction with the Dartmouth Library, seeks to create a place where these differences are registered through research, art, opinion, current events, and educational resources. Latino Intersections is a venue for scholars, students, artists, and activists to discuss the Latino experience in this country.

"We really want to encourage different opinions," said Israel Reyes, one of Latino Intersections' directors. "The entire site is linked by discussion forums where we hope to have not only scholars talking to one another, but artists addressing students, students questioning political activists and activists appealing to the community."

Latino Intersections is divided into four sections with the discussion forum at its core: Encrucijada/ Crossroads: An Online Academic Journal, a bi-annual peer-reviewed journal that presents current research in Latino/a issues, particularly those related to culture and education; New Voices/Nuevas Voces, a student journal that presents current projects focusing on Latino/a issues; Happenings/¿Qué pasa?, an area for news and a calendar of events that explore Latino/a issues in North America; and Resource Center/Centro de Recursos, a center for bibliographical information and links relating to Latino/a organizations and institutions, as well as an archive of the most current educational materials, debates, and practices.

Built into the Latino Intersections design is the capability for users to share more than just printed materials. Streaming video, sound files, multimedia presentations, and other digital media will allow users to interact in new ways and to share information that does not conform easily to other, print-based publications.

"As the site grows we hope to see it being used by a wider and wider population," says Reyes. "Digital media give us the flexibility to share different kinds of expressions and that more fully reflects the true diversity of the Latino/a communities."
