ABOUT DARTMOUTH EMS
:: Who we are ::
Dartmouth EMS provides standby Basic Life Support (BLS) coverage for Dartmouth College events including
club sport competitions, Student Activities programs, and other campus-wide events. Dartmouth EMS
members are trained to provide all appropriate BLS care ranging from simple first-aid to life-saving
interventions as nationally-certified EMT-B's. All events are staffed by students or faculty and services are provided
at minimal cost to the sponsoring organization or department. All funds that are raised through coverage charges
and/or donation receipts are used to defray the cost of equipment and other operating expenses. If you are interested in
helping us to provide these services, or if you would like EMS coverage at your event, please click on the
Events Coverage link on the navigation bar.
:: Weekend Campus Coverage ::
Dartmouth EMS provides full-time standby Basic Life Support (BLS) coverage for the Dartmouth College campus on weekends,
beginning at 10:00 PM continuing until 3:00 AM on Friday and Saturday nights. All Dartmouth EMS duty crews consist of two
New Hampshire-licensed EMTs and a Healthcare Provider CPR and First Aid trained aider. A third New Hampshire-licensed
EMT, usually a member of the officer board, may also function as a Shift Supervisor.
Please note, Dartmouth EMS does not provide ambulance transport to DHMC. If Dartmouth EMS is dispatched
to your location, its crew members will make a medical decision regarding the appropriate course of
treatment; these may include:
1) Release of conscious, mentally-competent patient who refuses medical attention (with or w/o treatment).
2) Treatment by Dartmouth EMS followed by transport by Safety & Security to Dick's House.
3) Treatment by Dartmouth EMS followed by transport by Hanover Fire to DHMC.
Dartmouth EMS is dispatched independently of the Hanover Fire Department and Hanover Police; however,
Hanover Police may automatically dispatched in the following instances:
1) Hanover Fire Department is requested by Dartmouth EMS crew on scene.
2) Hanover Fire Department response is automatically indicated by standing dispatch protocols based on
nature of patient's emergency.
3) There is suspicion of a crime or hazard at the incident location.
:: History ::
Dartmouth EMS was founded in 1999 by a group of motivated students looking to improve pre-hospital care
and education for the community. Largely an interest group at its formation, Dartmouth EMS has since
continued to grow and fill a variety of needs on campus. It has evolved to provide services such as
staffing Dick's House, the Dartmouth infirmary, overnights to alleviate staffing issues, providing
standby BLS coverage at varsity, club, and intramural athletic events, providing coverage at campus and
community events such as Relay for Life, and providing CPR/First Aid training to the campus and
community. As the club continues to prosper we are very grateful for the work that earlier leadership
has accomplished as we look to the future.
